First Week In UKM

Coming to university for the first time is very exciting, confusing, challenging and scary experience. Actually, I have no words to describe my feeling in my first week in UKM. I have mixed feelings, sometimes I feel excited but sometime I feel anxious. My first day in university is an unforgettable day for me. To be honest, Polytechnic and University, there is not much difference.

First day

I got up early that morning due to improper sleep during the previous night. It was due to the anxiety to start fresh with my new life. Once I arrived in UKM, I went to registration. I was very surprised because the registration at UKM was very fast and smooth. This was one of the most tiring days. We are given time until 3pm to unpack our things and clean our own room and after that we were asked to attend the first-year student meeting.

We ended or meeting at 11:00 pm. We were told that we need sleep early because tomorrow there will be more activities and more tiring than today.

Second day

I need to attend the opening ceremony for orientation week for first-year students at Chancellor Tun Abdul Razak Hall (DECTAR). Here we have been exposed to various information about UKM, including the vision, mission and history of UKM. This is the first time I went to DECTAR, I was surprised to see that UKM DECTAR is huge and splendid like I saw in the movie. I am very ecstatic and grateful because I had the opportunity to experience this and be one of the UKM"s students.

After attend the ceremony, I need to join the college activities. Senior has exposed us to some chants. We have to memorize chants of college and UKM for chants competition in DECTAR at the last day of orientation. Although it feels very strange for me but sometimes, I find it’s fun.

Third day

The third day was the day where I had the opportunity to visit my faculty. I am one of the students of the faculty of management and economics. I have visited some lecture halls, and I was surprised that the lecture halls in my faculty are very unique and modern. This is beyond my expectations.

Fourth day

At 7:15 am I need to walk to Dewan Gemilang to join the UKM Cergas event. We did some aerobics until 11:00 am. This activity was very tiring and the weather that morning is super scorching. My body couldn’t handle the sweltering, so I fainted on the day of the event. I was helped by several members of the Red Crescent Society.

At night, we need to go to UKM stadium to see the parade show which it represents every college in UKM. I was so enjoyed every parade show done by every college. There were various mascots representing each college. After enjoyed the parade show, we also had the chance to see the fireworks. For me, out of many orientation days, this is my favorite day.

Last day

On the last of orientation day, I need to go DECTAR to attend the closing orientation ceremony. we have been provided with UKM shawl that need to be worn at the swearing-in ceremony as UKM students. This is the moment I have been looking forward to, which is that I was officially become one of UKM's students.

After the ceremony in the morning, we have to attend DECTAR War, so this is where the chants that we have memorized before are useful. But luck was not on my side, in the evening I had a fever that I could not wake up. I tried to test for covid-19, it turned out that I was positive for covid-19, then I could not attend the DECTAR war. I was somber and disappointed. I was instructed to quarantine in the room by the facilitator.
